It is the beginning of a New Year and many of you are kick starting your New Year's resolution off right with a new exercise regimen. As you may have noticed, you are quite sore after a good session at the gym! The sore feeling that lingers a few days later is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS. This term is a fancy way of saying that your muscles are experiencing micro-trauma after exercising especially if they have not been stressed in a while.

Soreness is usually most significant in the first 24-72 hours after exercising. After an intense exercise your muscles adapt quickly and begin to grow. In order to prevent more damage to your muscles before they have had a chance to repair, you will feel a dull, achy pain. Normally this pain will subside within a couple of days.

While DOMS is perfectly normal, if people feel the effect of their workout much longer it can be from a number of different reasons like working out too hard too soon. The problem that arises with this is that with unhealthy muscles leads to unhealthy spines. As you may know, muscles move bones and if muscles are too tight because they are spastic, they will pull on your joints resulting in misalignment. With chiropractic care, the adjustments will release unwanted muscle tension allowing spastic muscles to relax. This way you are able to heal faster and more effectively so you can get back to feeling good and doing your workout without hesitation.

Here at Watkins Family Chiropractic, Dr Josh Watkins and Dr. Lindsay Hurlbut have adjusted thousands of patients relating to DOMS. If you or someone you know is in need of chiropractic care in Prior Lake, Savage, Burnsville, or Shakopee area, give us a call to see how we can help.
